A good question, and one that takes entirely too long to register.
Mako can't be sure what he needs. He needs Wu to be back, he needs to have been there sooner, he needs to know where Sam Winchester is and why he did this, he needs to prep the house for Wu to get back, he needs to make sure Wu gets back.
He can't do any of those things. Raleigh and Chuck will probably help him track Sam down, but Korra's already on it, and Mako knows he won't be at his best right now, no matter how much he's shoving everything down into a burning ball in his own belly to ignore.
And he has to take care of Fritter.
His breath is a heavy thing, quiet over the line. Evelyn is probably the last friendly person who saw Wu alive, he realizes, and clutches his fingers so tight around the Fluid that it digs into his hand.
"Did he leave anything at work?" He asks, which isn't at all what he needs, but he can't bring himself to say anything else at the moment.
"No, I don't think so," she says quietly, cradling her fluid against her shoulder, leaning against her kitchen counter. It's much later now, she's home, has been pacing for ages until that horrible text came through.
There's definitely a glass of wine on the counter, next to a half empty bottle.
"I can check tomorrow, when I go to open the store."
"Thank you," Mako says, his voice a ringing hollow thing. He is in the depths of Wu's house, and Chuck and Raleigh are here, still, but Mako knew he had to update Evelyn, and having a task was important. First it was find Wu, and then deal with his ghost, and then get home, and then call Evelyn. He dreads running out of tasks, because then he will have to face the yawning darkness in front of him, and Mako doesn't know what happens when that wave breaks over him. It'll pull him under, he's pretty sure.
He swallows, leaning his weight on the countertop once his own legs stop doing the job. "You might actually want to not... go to work. It happened pretty close to the shop, and the guy who did it is still out there somewhere. I don't want the same thing happening to you."
He can't deal with that, too, with Evelyn also being gone: she's a steady kind of spitfire, and Mako likes her too much to let anything like that to happen.
"I can wait a few days, until things settle. I'll check then, if you like." She'll wait a few days, to go to work, she means. She doesn't want it to happen to her, either - and with the whole bloody city being the way it is, it's a distinct probability.
"You call me, if you need anything. Alright? I mean it."
He will not. Mako will retreat into himself again, try to keep himself from falling apart with the memory of Wu's wrist snapping and the gaping space next door from which his friends disappear.
But here, in the quiet kitchen with Evelyn's voice on the other end of the line, he makes a promise that he can't keep. "I'll let you know, Evelyn. Stay safe."
She sort of has a feeling he can't (or wont) keep the promise, and she sighs a little, running a hand through her wild hair as she paces in her kitchen.
"Alright, I will." A lie for a lie. "We'll speak again soon."

You can’t trust this place. Not checking in like this isn’t like him.
no subject
Of course, of course. I'll go now.
You don't think something has happened to him, do you?
[ she's so worried now :c ]

No, no. Not at all.
[ She's going outside to do a round of the block, worried and quick footed. ]
He was the same as usual - you know how he is.
no subject
I know how he is. That’s why I’m worried. He always texts. Usually too much.

[ She smiles lightly because yes...Wu does text a lot, it's sweet. But she's very worried now, so the smile is fleeting. ]
Will you keep me updated?
