"Thank you," Mako says, his voice a ringing hollow thing. He is in the depths of Wu's house, and Chuck and Raleigh are here, still, but Mako knew he had to update Evelyn, and having a task was important. First it was find Wu, and then deal with his ghost, and then get home, and then call Evelyn. He dreads running out of tasks, because then he will have to face the yawning darkness in front of him, and Mako doesn't know what happens when that wave breaks over him. It'll pull him under, he's pretty sure.
He swallows, leaning his weight on the countertop once his own legs stop doing the job. "You might actually want to not... go to work. It happened pretty close to the shop, and the guy who did it is still out there somewhere. I don't want the same thing happening to you."
He can't deal with that, too, with Evelyn also being gone: she's a steady kind of spitfire, and Mako likes her too much to let anything like that to happen.
"I can wait a few days, until things settle. I'll check then, if you like." She'll wait a few days, to go to work, she means. She doesn't want it to happen to her, either - and with the whole bloody city being the way it is, it's a distinct probability.
"You call me, if you need anything. Alright? I mean it."
He will not. Mako will retreat into himself again, try to keep himself from falling apart with the memory of Wu's wrist snapping and the gaping space next door from which his friends disappear.
But here, in the quiet kitchen with Evelyn's voice on the other end of the line, he makes a promise that he can't keep. "I'll let you know, Evelyn. Stay safe."
She sort of has a feeling he can't (or wont) keep the promise, and she sighs a little, running a hand through her wild hair as she paces in her kitchen.
"Alright, I will." A lie for a lie. "We'll speak again soon."
